Birdland marks John Coltrane’s 100th birthday with its 25th annual all-star celebration of his music. Saxophonists Jimmy Greene and Troy Roberts lead a quintet with pianist Helen Sung, bassist Lonnie Plaxico and drummer Steve Smith, tracing Coltrane’s bold, soulful legacy. Expect inventive improvisation and fresh takes on classics such as “Naima” and “Giant Steps.” Greene appears Sept. 22, 23 and 26; Roberts Sept. 24–26.
